Albert Einstein (アルバート・アインシュタイン)という人類史上最大の天才がかつて、”The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.” (狂気の定義は、違う結果を期待して同じことを何度も繰り返すことです)と言ったとか言わなかったとかという論争になっています。今回は、このアインシュタイン博士の有名な格言は、本当にアインシュタイン博士が言ったものなのかどうかを調べてみたいと思います。
アインシュタイン博士の狂気の定義
Over the course of the past eight months, I’ve been entertained, amazed, disappointed, angered and dumbfounded by the candidacy of Donald J. Trump. At times I thought I would wake up from a bad dream and normalcy would return to the political process.

I’m a big fan of Einstein’s definition of insanity: “doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different outcome.” Electing the same old politicians, or even the newer ones who play by the same old tired rules, is effectively the same thing, and it’s insane.

上記のニュース記事にも掲載されている、皆に愛されているこのアインシュタイン博士の狂気の定義の名言が、実は、アインシュタイン博士によるものではないと、Einstein didn’t say such a thing!, He has been misquoted!!のように主張する人をネット上で多々みかけます。本当なのでしょうか？気になったので調べてみました。
狂気の定義はアインシュタイン作なのか？
Different versions of this quote appear everywhere (doing the same thing twice, expecting the same result, etc.), and we owe none of them to Einstein.
After Michael Becker, an editor at the Bozeman Daily Chronicle (a local paper in Montana), let the wrong version slide into an editorial, he did some research on his personal blog.
Becker traced the original back to Rita Mae Brown, the mystery novelist. In her 1983 book “Sudden Death,” she attributes the quote to a fictional “Jane Fulton,” writing, “Unfortunately, Susan didn’t remember what Jane Fulton once said. ‘Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, but expecting different results.'” http://www.businessinsider.com/
色々なバージョンがあるものの、どれ一つとってもアインシュタイン博士の名言ではない。デイリークロニクルというモンタナにある地方新聞の編集者のマイケル・ベッカーが、間違ったバージョンを社説に載せてしまったので、個人ブログでちょっとした調査を行っている。ベッカーはミステリー小説化のリタ・マエ・ブラウンをその名言の出所だとした。1983年に書かれた彼女の著書 ”突然死”において、彼女はその名言はジェーン・フルトンという架空の人物の作だとしている。」
この編集者は、自分のミスが実はミスでも何でもなかったと言いたいがために、この名言はアインシュタイン氏の作でも何でもないと言ってしまったように思われる節があります(プライドの高さがこの人の文章からは滲み出ているので)。 このブログに対して非常に興味深いコメントがありました。

そうは言うものの、アインシュタイン博士は、問題を生み出した同じ思考でその問題を解くことはできない、とはっきり言っていて、基本的に、ただ、それを違った言い回しにしているだけです。
ググると、”You cannot solve a problem with the same consciousness that created it”, “we cannot solve a problem with the same consciousness that created it”のパターンもあるようです。未解決の問題を解決するためには、コペルニクス的発想の転換が必要だということを、この文は訴えています。裏を返せば、同じ思考で違った結果を求めることの愚かさを訴えているとも言えるので、このアインシュタイン博士の言葉をもじれば、狂気の定義である「同じことを繰り返し行い、違う結果を期待すること」に行き着くのだろうと思われます。狂気の定義は、確かにアインシュタイン博士の言葉ではないのかもしれませんが、アインシュタイン博士が実際に言っている言葉の本質は同じことを示唆しているので、必ずしも、狂気の定義がアインシュタイン博士によるものではないとも言い切れないというのが私が導いた結論になっています。
