certain to, certain ofとsure to, sure ofは大きく意味が違います。certain toとsure toが他者視点であるのに対し、certain ofとsure ofは自分視点になります。この違いは必ず押さえておきましょう。certainとsureではニュアンスの違いが若干存在します。I am certainは、I am sureよりも確実性が高い時に使うというネイティブが多いですが、大した違いはない、前者が文語的なのに対して、後者はより口語的であると言う人もいます。例えば、誰かに何か頼みごとをした時に、頼んだ相手から”Sure”という返事は良く聞く一方で、”Certainly”という返事はあまり聞きませんが、前者よりも後者の方がformalに聞こえるのは確かです。
certain toとcertain ofの違い
He is certain to ～ (不定詞) → 話し手が彼が～すると確信している。
He is certain of ～ (動名詞) → 彼自身が～すると確信している。
(彼の友人達は)彼がレースに勝つことを確信している。彼が勝つに決っている。
He is certain of winning the race. = He, himself, is certain that he will win the race.
彼は自分がレースに勝つことを確信している。俺が勝つに決っている。
sure toとsure ofの違い
He is certain of winning the race.は、He is sure of winning the race.と書き換えることが出来ます。さらに、He is certain to win the race.は、He is sure to win the race.と書き換えることができます。この場合のsureとcertainは同義語なのですが、気を付けなければいけないのは、He is sure to win.を書き換える時に間違えて、It is sure that he will win.としないことです。面白いのは、It is certain that he will win.ならOKだということです。ここで、最低限覚えておくべきことは、He is sure to win ~ は、他者が彼が勝つことを確信しているという意味になり、He is sure of winning ~ は、彼自身が自分が勝つことを確信しているという意味になるということです。
彼がレースに勝つに決っている。
※It is sure that he will win the race.としないことに注意する。
