a little, little, a few, fewとa lot of, lots of, many, muchを使う時に気を付けることは、lots ofはインフォーマル過ぎるので会話以外ではあまり使わない方がいいということ。a lot of も厳格なフォーマル英語が要求される場面では使用は避けた方がいいといこと。それと、much, little, a little (不可算名詞)、many, few, a few (可算名詞)、lots of, a lot of (可算/不可算名詞)ということ、much, many の使い方があいまいな場合は、lots ofかa lot ofを使っておけばまず間違いはないということです。lots ofとa lot ofは、ネイティブに好んで使われています。非常に多いと言いたい時は、so many, so much を使うのがベストです。

a little, little と a few, few の違い

例えば little と few の違いの簡単な例として

意味は、1が少しは友達ができた。2が少しは上達した。3はほとんど後悔していない。4はほとんど知らない。使い分けは修飾する名詞が可算名詞なのか不可算名詞かを知っていれば簡単なのですが、どっちなのか区別がつかない時はどうすればいいのか？という問題にぶち当たります。そういう時は名詞が複数形なのか単数形なのかを調べればいいだけで、語尾にsが付いていなければ特殊なケースを除けば不可算名詞と考えておいても間違いではないでしょう。

a lot, lotsにも副詞的用法があります。
He talks (a little, little, lots, a lot, much). 意味はそれぞれ左から、少しは喋る、ほとんど喋らない、他はよく喋るになります。a little と little にはニュアンスの違いがあり、a little にはポジティブな意味合いがあるのですが、little にはネガティブなイメージがあります。日本語で言うところの少しはあります(a little)、ほとんどありません(little)という感じです。このサイトが大変参考になります。lots, a lot, much にはそのようなニュアンスの違いはありません。He talks little. よりも He doesn’t talk much. とやるのが普通というか主流みたいです。

a lot of, lots of を使うべき

ただ、ありがとうを考えた場合、thanks a lot, thanks lotsよりもthank you (so, very) muchの方がフォーマルなのは言うまでもないでしょう。ありがとうにはその他にも、thanks much, many thanks, much appreciated (I appreciate your kindness), much obliged (I am obliged to you)等色々あるのですが、殆どの場合、thanks, thank you だけで用は足ります。
