per seの辞書的な意味は、by itself, in itself, of itself, for itself, as such, intrinsicallyとなっていて、本質的に、それ自体(は)みたいな意味になるようなのですが、ネイティブによっては、only, actuallyという意味合いで使えるという人もいます。あと、perse(濃い青色、紫色)と間違えないように注意が必要です。ちなみに、Per Seは、NYにあるフレンチレストランです。たまに、per sayのようなmisspelling(誤ったスペリング)を見かけます。今日はこのper seについて少し詳しく調べてみたいと思います。
per se の用法

このように、per seは一見不必要に見えても、取り除いてしまうと微妙なニュアンスが失われてしまう可能性があるという事です。逆に言えば、英文に微妙な言外の意味を含ませたい時に使うと有効とも言えます。
