この違いは何なのかが良く分かりません。ただ単に a number of という集合名詞に、多くの、いくらかの、若干といった意味があって複数形になるという事を知らないだけでは説明がつかない何かがあるような気がします。peopleを単数扱い(peopleは単数扱いもできるので)していて、womenは複数扱いしているだけなのかもしれませんが、如何せんここのところはネイティブでもかなり適当って感じがします。ネットを見ていると欧米系の人間よりもアジア系の人間の方が a number of = many or some という事を知っている人間が多いように見受けられます。まさに文法のアジア人と言った感がします。オックスフォード辞書でダメを押しましょう。
