would just as soon, would soonerは、むしろ〜したい、できれば〜したい、といった意味のイディオムで、I would rather stay at home.(家にいたい)のwould ratherと同義で、否定形になると、できれば~したくない(してもらいたくない)、といった意味になります。

I thought we were going to the movies not to that party at my ex-girlfriend’s parents’ house. I’d rather go home (do nothing) than go to the party (where I’ll be very uncomfortable -negative).
I’m not as interested in the party as I am in the game we could play at home. I’d rather go home (and play the game – positive) than go to the party (also positive).

would just as soon A as B = BするぐらいならAした方が全然まし(Bはネガティブ)という意味以外にも、BよりはAしたい(AもBもポジティブ)という意味があると、１人のアメリカ英語のネイティブが説明しています。どっちを使うかは、前後の文脈によるみたいです。似たようなことを説明しているイギリス英語のネイティブ達もいます。
While I agree with panj that, formally, “just as soon X as Y” expresses equivalence between X and Y, I do think I would also use it to express a “mild preference”.
This site gives both senses: interestingly, it puts ‘rather, more readily’ first and ‘equally’ second.
